Description
“The greenest building is the existing one”
The federal tax credits for green remodeling end energy efficient improvements have tripled to 30%. Industry research suggests that remodeling and retrofitting the nation’s older homes will have a more significant effect on reducing residential energy consumption than meeting even the most aggressive efficiency goals for new homes. Help your clients take advantage of government incentives and tax credits.
Upon completion of this session, you will be able to overcome common objections to going green, including the myth that green is too expensive, green is not durable, green is a gimmick, green materials are not easily available, and green does not make sense. The featured case study is Arizona’s first LEED certified single-family remodel, providing strong support for green remodeling. Attendees will learn common mistakes to avoid, best practices, how to design green, the cost and return on energy efficient improvements including solar, the latest in government incentives for green remodeling, green material sourcing, recycle and reuse guides, and an introduction to green rating systems including LEED and NAHB.
Get additional detailed information during a 30 minute Q & A from a panel of experts from Solar, HVAC, Water Efficient fixtures, Appliances, Design, Paints and Coatings, Insulation, Materials, and Windows and Doors.
Knowledge is the competitive advantage to remodeling green; distinguish your self from the competition in this powerful and informative Green Remodeling Workshop.

Objectives
Attendees of the Green Remodel Workshop will learn through analysis and supporting documentation that green does not have to be more expensive, and that green remodeling is a practical alternative to traditional construction practices.

Objective I: Lessons Learned and Mistakes to Avoid
LEED is not a design tool, it is a rating system. A good case for solar -a water heater is responsible for 12% of a home’s energy consumption making a case for a solar hot water heater. Avoid instant hot water heaters in Arizona, learn why. Implement grey water and rain water capture whenever possible.

Objective II: Green Design and Planning: Green Rating Systems & the Inspiration for a Green Remodel
The most important step for a green remodel, or for any construction project, is the Team Charrette. A review of green rating systems, including LEED, Energy Star, and NAHB’s Green Rating Program. The definition of a green home, you will see why “an efficient home does not equal a green home.” Why is location important when making a home green? A photo journal of our case study and how each strategy is influenced by the LEED rating system, or the NAHB green rating system. When your client is building green, you must establish the importance of Energy Efficiency, Air Quality, Design and Materials, Water Efficiency, Location, and Design.

Objective III: Reuse & Recycling
Reduce waste during your remodel. Find out where to send gypsum board, concrete, fixtures, appliances, and more.

Objective IV: Tax Credits, Rebates, and Stimulus Funds for Green Remodeling, Retrofitting, and Weatherization
Save money by using government incentives and tax credits for green improvements.

Objective V: Green Features – Material Sourcing for a LEED Home: Tradeoffs, LEED Credits, Costs. How much does a green remodel cost?
Every decision you make during a green remodel or any other green building, will be influenced by factors that include budget, efficiency, carbon impact, aesthetics, indoor air quality, and targeted LEED rating; an in-depth analysis of the building envelope, HVAC system, insulation, vapor barriers, plumbing systems, lighting systems, and interior finishes.

Objective VI: A Case Study -Energy Analysis and Comparison of a LEED and NAHB Green Remodel compared to a Traditional Remodel
A detailed energy analysis of the pre and post remodeled structure will be presented. Using Energy 10 as the point of reference, you will see proof that a green remodel is twice as efficient compared to a traditional remodel.

Objective VII: Your Plan Based on Your Budget and Green Goals – LEED, NAHB, LEED-like, or Low Budget-Big Impact Green Improvements

Objective VIII: Expert Discussion and Q & A from Expert Panel
30 minutes to ask questions and get informed answers
Solar, HVAC, Design, Insulation, Coatings, Financial Pro-forma, Materials, and Windows and Doors

Objective IX: LEED Project Tours
(This section applies to Phoenix only)
The best way to learn is to see a project in person. Tours of a LEED-H remodel, and the opportunity to tour a NAHB Emerald Certified Remodel.

Target Audience
Licensed professionals, including Architects, Contractors, Designers, Specifiers, Municipalities, Code Enforcers, Builders, Students, and anyone interested in revitalizing and making aging housing stock green and more energy efficient.
This course is not intended for the General Public.
